Visual artist Kelsie Coker is a woman of many diversions including stream-of-consciousness journaling and frequent hand-washing. Born in Anchorage, Alaska in 1997, she migrated to the dry and angry Phoenix, Arizona as a child. Coker is self-taught in every channel of art she practices and is heavily inspired by her extremely vivid and sometimes ethereal dreams. Her most recent paintings are characterized by heavy-handed smudges and Pre-Raphaelite influence.
Although she would consider herself first and foremost a painter, Coker is also well-versed in film photography, poetry, collage, and the process of creating and self-publishing zines. Her zines are stocked in the Arizona State University library and have been exhibited at the Phoenix Zine Fest and events benefiting Planned Parenthood. In 2013, Coker launched BUSH SUCKS VINTAGE, a solo-run online vintage shop where she acts the curator, model, and photographer. Under the umbrella of her vintage shop, she released a limited line of one-off clothing pieces handmade with rare vintage fabrics under the working title BUSH SUCKS. Coker is a women’s liberation and animal rights activist, which she also embodies in her work.
