Gleb Torubarov is a China-based digital filmmaker who has produced works of both fiction and non-fiction features. While initially inspired by both Eisenstein and David Fincher to pursue a career in film, his interest in classical Japanese cinema and the works of Kurosawa, Mizoguchi, and Naruse brought him to Japan where he studied film, media and communication. Later, he moved to China to pursue his career in filmmaking. In Asia, he has focused his studies on issues of communication between people of different cultural backgrounds.
Living in a multi-cultural environment and being a foreigner himself, Mr. Torubarov’s themes reflect the transparency of cultural borders and the effect of cultural relativism from growing globalization. Mr. Torubarov’s characters struggle to overcome linguistic, political and philosophical barriers as they pass through their new environments. Through juxtaposition, Mr. Torubarov promotes tolerance and mutual understanding, leading to the message of self-awareness and community.
Mr. Torubarov’s long-term goal as a filmmaker is to connect citizens from East and West and examine their triumphs through stories of individuals prevailing over cultural divides.
